NACE Partners’ Meeting

2017

The first NACE Partners’ Meeting took place in May 2017 in Tunis. During the conjunction of several organizations with NACE and its partners, there were raised topics like How can we pitch Civic Education on the Agenda of international organizations and what could be NACE’s role in it? What should be the key priorities of NACE? How does Civic Education contribute to capturing the complexity of the societies we live in and overcome polarization? NACE should be a service provider for philanthropists as an advisory consultant in the region and promote critical thinking. Civic Education is the tool to deal with complexities. While dealing with these current issues, there were also some ideas for the future of NACE as a network. Taking everything into account, the invited audience carved out that the media representation should be promoted and the first steps of institutionalization of NACE should be advanced.

EUROCLIO 25th Annual Conference

Marseille, France
21-26 April 2018

EUROCLIO – European Association of History Educators was delighted and honored to organize the 25th Annual Conference and Professional Development and Training Course from 21-26 April 2018. The conference was hosted and co-organised by EUROCLIO’s co-founding member organisation from France, the Association des Professeurs d’Histoire et de Géographie (APHG). The conference took place in Marseille, France’s door to the Mediterranean horizon.
To understand the current challenges around the Mediterranean, history, heritage, and citizenship education has a key role to play. That is precisely the reason why EUROCLIO and APHG have decided to choose “Mediterranean Dialogues: Teaching History beyond our Horizons” as the theme for its 25th Annual Conference.

Different NACE members attended the 25th Euroclio Conference in Marseille. The conference was an interesting opportunity to explore the lines of intersection between history teaching and civic education. It also offered a networking opportunity for the different members to get in touch with similar organizations across the Atlantic, as well as different Arab organizations participating. Topics of teaching controversial issues as controversial, empathy as a tool of teaching, and also how civil wars are taught in schools were the highlight of the controversial issues discussed.

NACE meets NICE

A model for empowering citizens in Sub-Saharan Africa?

NICE – the National Initiative for Civic Education from Lilongwe, Malawi – has been present as a facilitator of civic education for more than 15 years. It emerged in cooperation with a civil society initiative in the light of the 1999 general elections and received guidance from the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and its Malawi-German Program for Democracy and Decentralization (MGPDD). Since then, it has developed into a public trust with more than 8,000 trained volunteers in the communities, 200 professional civic educators, and 31 district offices. The board of NICE consists of six elected members and three government secretaries. NICE’s goals comprise the education of high-quality civic education and the empowerment of the Malawian citizens, which in turn help to ensure good governance by politicians. With their expertise, they could be a valuable partner for civic education across the African continent. As a grassroots organization, NICE can offer some helpful insight on how to reach citizens at the local or community level and is experienced in working closely with policy-makers on a national scale. On Wednesday, July 26, 2017, representatives of NACE met up with two members of NICE in Bonn, Germany. Petra Grüne and Sascha Scheier from the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) had an interesting discussion with Ollen Mwalubunju and Amos Tizora about common issues, the exchange of good practices, and possibilities for networking beyond national boundaries. For the future, the aim is to explore further opportunities for collaboration with NICE.

Eastern African Civic Education Forum 2017

22 – 24 November / Uganda

The NACE Supporter Robert Bosch Foundation organized the first Eastern African Civic Education Forum in collaboration with the Ugandan Foundation for Human Rights Initiative, in Entebbe, in November 2017. The Forum brought together 15 of the most influential, young, and innovative Eastern and Southern African Civic Education organizations. The general objectives of the Forum 2017 were to map current challenges and best practices in Civic Education, to provide an opportunity for networking and knowledge sharing among participants, and to explore interest in and ideas for possible future collaborations.

The keynote speaker Hon. Dr. Abdullah Makame (East African Legislative Assembly), reminded the audience of the importance of cooperation, especially in the East African Community (EAC). Since the borders were made by the colonial powers, the East African countries share common values, languages, characteristics, and cultures in border communities. He illustrated his arguments by quoting the African proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”

A pre-workshop survey conducted amongst all participants laid the ground for 13 workshops to discuss pressing issues like the involvement of women and girls in CE; how to teach CE in fragmented societies; effective learning methods to unlock young people´s interest; how to establish a culture of peace or whether the political or the economic comes first. Workshop discussions finally led to three main topics that were further elaborated: Sustainability, Innovation, and Networking.

NECE and NACE were represented by the NACE Steering Committee Members Mr Moez Ali, Tunisia, and Mrs Petra Grüne, Germany, who shared their experience about the benefit of networking and ways to establish them. Further, they emphasized the importance to promote solidarity among Civic Education actors (and their sponsors) at all levels, national, regional, and international. Participants stressed their interest in an enhancement of the south-to-south exchange of ideas and experiences on Civic Education via such networks in Africa that would allow sharing of perspectives in the policy formulation processes. Beneath synergies and avoidance of duplication of actions, mutual support in form of peer review, learning, measuring of impact of the actions undertaken and collective advocacy and bargain and to establish a network between NECE, NACE and Civic Education actors in the Eastern and Southern Africa region were mentioned as important potential benefits. These connections would allow structural exchange and advancement of Civic Education programs and could open access to the political framework of bodies such as EU, EAC, Arab League, OECD by joining forces for the sake of Civic Education. As a consequence, the participants established a new network: CENESA – Civic Education Network for Eastern and Southern Africa.
