European societies, albeit at different paces, have undergone profound changes in the fabric of their populations due to EU enlargement, European Citizenship, globalization and migration processes. Traditional concepts of citizenship and citizenship education in Europe have to be revised in the light of these developments. What are the challenges of Citizenship Education in Europe today? In search of answers, the focus of this volume are the conditions under which learning and living democracy in Europe may occur most effectively. Topics of discussions are various ways in which citizenship and citizenship education are defined, ranging from historical, political, and sociological analyses to country case studies, new educational concepts, and best practices.
